Wake Forest had the highest-scoring football team in its history last season, but it may be even better this year thanks to the recovery of talented wide receiver Donavon Greene. Greene, a four-star recruit from Mount Airy, suffered an ACL tear during off-season workouts before last season. He didn't play a down during the 11-3 season, when the Deacons won the ACC's Atlantic division. "It was tough, no doubt about it," Greene said of missing last season. At 6-foot-2 and a physical 210 pounds, Greene showed flashes of what he could become in 2020 but got banged up late in the season.

He started and played in eight games in 2020 and made 29 catches for 582 yards with two touchdowns. "There's going to an adjustment, but I'm looking forward to being out there," Greene said of Monday's first day of practice. "We had a good season last year and I'm excited to work with all the receivers again and to just be part of the team again." The Demon Deacons will report for preseason camp on Sunday then have their first practice Monday morning in preparation for the opener on Sept. 1 at home against VMI. - Winston Salem Journal

Boise State will end the Mountain West's era of two divisions as the king of the Mountain Division, according to conference media members. The Mountain West kicked off football media days Wednesday by releasing its predicted order of finish. The preseason all-conference team will be announced Thursday morning. Boise State was picked to win its division or a conference title for the 12th year in a row. Boise State went 7-5 last fall, posting its worst record in more than a decade, and the Broncos saw their streak of four straight Mountain West championship game appearances snapped.

The Broncos return the bulk of last year's starters, though, including quarterback Hank Bachmeier, who is the favorite to win the starting job for a fourth year in a row. The senior already ranks in the top 10 at Boise State in career passing yards (6,108, No. 7) and touchdown passes (35, No. 10). He posted career highs in completions (252), passing yards (3,079) and passing touchdowns (20) last season despite playing on an injured knee. - Idaho Statesman

Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier has met quite of few of his sports idols during his college career. Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, who has spoken to the team twice during Bachmeier's career, and Bo Jackson top his list, but he said meeting Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson on Monday ranks right up there. "It was a big honor for all of us quarterbacks to speak to him and be around a true professional," Bachmeier told the Idaho Statesman. "I was pretty star-struck. I took a lot of his words to heart, and the biggest thing I took away was how intentional and deliberate he was in everything he did." Wilson - a nine-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion with the Seattle Seahawks, who traded him to Denver in March - was in Boise for an event with Alaska Airlines.

Between appearances, he took time to meet with Boise State's quarterbacks and speak to a group of players and coaches. "He was big on what he let himself consume in terms of social media and the external influences that can kind of affect you," Bachmeier said, "and he talked about speaking a championship language to yourself." Bachmeier said one of the most impressive things about Wilson's career is how much he's accomplished despite those who doubted him. The 5-foot-11 All-Pro was the shortest one in a group picture he took with the quarterbacks, especially when compared to 6-foot-6 redshirt freshman Taylen Green. - Idaho Statesman

Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier will be on the field when the Broncos have the first of their 15 spring practices on Friday, but he'll take part in a limited capacity, Boise State coach Andy Avalos said Thursday. Bachmeier is still recovering from offseason knee surgery, but he's ahead of schedule, according to the second-year coach. Bachmeier - who beat out USC transfer Jack Sears to win the starting job last fall - said in December that he played through a damaged meniscus in his right knee last season. He had surgery to repair it on Dec. 29. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound native of Murrieta, California, posted career highs in completions (252), passing yards (3,079) and passing touchdowns (20) last season. He is already ranked in the top 10 all-time at Boise State in some categories, including career passing yards (6,108, No. 7) and career TD passes (35, No. 10). - Idaho Statesman
